The word “equinox” comes from Latin aequus, meaning “equal,” and nox, ”night.” On the equinox, day and night are roughly equal in length. Mabon is the name given to the Autumn Equinox on the Celtic Wheel of the Year (or Pagan Wheel of the Year), marking the second harvest and the point where day and night are of equal length before the year tips toward the darker half.The name Mabon is derived from Mabon ap Modron, a figure in Welsh mythology whose name means Divine Son. In modern Wiccan and Druidic traditions, it symbolizes the harmony between light and dark, inviting practitioners to honour their accomplishments and release what no longer serves them before the onset of winter.
Mabon and Samhain represent the autumnal season, a time of balance, reflection and the eventual end to the year. The Celtic new year was supposed to be celebrated during Samhain.
